In early 2023, the Economic Development Officer for the RM of La Broquerie put a call out to the community to discuss the possibility of a Farmers’ Market. There was a lot of interest, but it would take a lot of work to make a market a reality. And that’s where Maryann Lepp and Cheryl Beyak came in.
“We saw this as a unique opportunity to bring the community together, to celebrate the history, multiple cultures, and diversity of La Broquerie,” said Maryann. “We were excited about the possibilities of bringing local growers, makers, and bakers together, along with families and community members - not just to shop, but to connect.”
And over the 4 markets of the 2023 season, that’s exactly what happened. With the number of unique vendors growing quickly into the twenties, and up to 300 visitors on any one market day, the market was no doubt successful.
“It was a lot of hours to create this labour of love, but we are thrilled with the results” said Cheryl. “We are so grateful for the support of the community, the RM, our generous sponsors, and of course to the La Broquerie Hotel for the use of their site and facilities.”
For the 2024 season, Maryann, who runs a successful AirBnB in the community and is a maker and baker herself, and Cheryl, an experienced real estate development project coordinator turned Realtor, have decided to step back from the daily management of the market.
“We are delighted that Sarah and Vernon (Big Hero 8 Farm) are taking on the principal roles to grow the market from here - 2024 will see an increase from 4 markets to 15! We will stay on with the market in new roles, as members of the Board that is being developed, to support them in this transition and for the continuation of the mission and vision of the market.”
